The Art of Cloisonne
In the 14th century, the Art of Cloisonne was passed onto the Chinese by western travelers. Perfected by the Chinese, Cloisonne art of applying colorful enamels to the surface of a bronze or copper object.
The artistic technique requires several time-consuming steps, starting with molding the base metal into the desired shape. Then, brass brass wires are soldered to form a pattern, into which colored enamels are inlaid, then fired. The enameling and firing process is repeated until a perfectly smooth finish is obtained. The surface is then polished, revealing the brass wires for gold plating.
